Encinitas Smog Check

Smog Check and Repair at Furgerson’s Garage

Furgerson’s Garage is a California-licensed Smog Check and Repair Station. You can bring your car, SUV or light truck to our shop on Second Street, one block off of Highway 101 in Encinitas - then walk to Moonlight Beach if you wish while we check your vehicle for smog emissions and assess whether it needs attention.

Does Your Vehicle Need a Smog Check?*

In California, not all vehicles have to be smog-checked, and we’ll be straight with you about whether your vehicle needs it. For example, California vehicle emissions control laws and regulations require a smog check when:
  • Your CA Registration Renewal Notice says "Smog Certification Required." Most vehicles registered in this state have to pass a smog check every two years, and the DMV will let you know when your vehicle’s smog check time is coming up.
  • You are selling your vehicle (you must get a Smog Certificate before you can complete the sale).
  • You’re bringing your vehicle into California to be registered (you can’t get it registered until you’ve gotten the Smog Certificate).

Every question you may have about smog testing probably has an answer on the State of California’s Bureau of Automotive Repair website, www.smogcheck.ca.gov.

San Diego County Is an Enhanced Area

The need for a smog check depends in part on your vehicle’s type, its model year, and the area where it’s registered. Most of San Diego County (and definitely the coastal part of the county, including Encinitas) is an “Enhanced Area,” meaning that vehicles with particular model years must be smog-certified every two years during their registration renewal with DMV.

New Visible Smoke Smog Test

Furgerson’s Garage staff keeps up with ever-changing automotive technology, including the developments in smog check requirements. For example, a new smog check requirement was implemented in late March 2008 in California. It requires that all vehicles undergoing a smog check inspection also be visually inspected for smoke from the tailpipe and the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system. Smoke that is a problem can be:
  • black or gray smoke or soot from an overly rich condition
  • blue or bluish-white smoke from burning oil

Steam from condensation will not be considered a failure for this visible smoke inspection, and smoke from any area other than the PCV system or tailpipe (no matter what the cause) will not be considered a failure of the visible smoke test.
