Encinitas Automatic Transfer Case Fluid Change

Also referred to as a transfer gearbox, a transfer box or a transfer gearcase, a transfer case is a component found in vehicles with a four-wheel drive or an all-wheel drive system. A transfer case is connected to the front and rear axles, as well as the transmission, via the drive shaft (a piece of equipment that transmits torque and rotation). Transfer cases may operate via a set of gears or, as is the case with most modern-built vehicles, they may operate via a system of chains.

While gear-driven transfer cases are primarily used in powerful, heavy trucks, chain-driven transfer cases (which tend to be lighter and quieter) are generally installed in passenger cars, compact trucks and SUVs. Some off-road enthusiasts opt to change their chain-driven transfer case into a gear-driven system in order to boost the strength and power of their vehicle.

Regardless of the type of transfer case a vehicle operates with, it’s crucial to note that these units require fluid to keep them lubricated and to cool them down. Improper fluid levels, old fluid and fluid leaks can lead to serious problems with a vehicle’s transfer case, which (in the worst cases) can prevent a car from running.

Fixing Transfer Cases

Transfer cases can have other problems besides those relating to fluid levels and leakage. Other issues that may create minor to severe problems with a transfer case can include:

  • Broken or stretched chains, which are commonly indicated by loud banging or popping sounds
  • Lack of vacuum pressure, which can prevent a vehicle from being able to get into four-wheel drive mode
  • Cracks or other damage to the unit housing the transfer case, which can enhance fluid leakage and other problems

If you are experiencing problems with your vehicle’s transfer case (or if you suspect your vehicle’s transmission is acting up in any other way), be sure to have your vehicle thoroughly checked out by a well-trained professional in order to properly diagnose any possible problems.
