When to Get a Fluid Flush

Note: when draining a fluid from a vehicle, about 30 percent of the ineffective fluid typically remains in the system, as it falls into different niches and continues to coat the surfaces of various parts. These situations may call for a fluid flush to remove as much residual, ineffective fluid as possible. The vehicle's owner's manual provides a suggested fluid flush schedule for a specific make, model and year of the given car.

A General Schedule of When to Get Car Fluids Flushed

While the intervals at which a car's fluids should be flushed will vary according to the make, model and year of the motor vehicle, generally:

• Brake fluids should be flushed every 25,000 to 30,000 miles (or every two to five years)
• Oil changes should occur every 3,000 to 5,000 miles (or every three months)
• Power steering fluids should be flushed every 45,000 to 60,000 miles (or every three to five years)
• Transmission fluid flushes should take place every 30,000 to 60,000 miles (unless the car is heavily used, in which case it is recommended that a transmission fluid flush take place every 15,000 miles)
