Check Engine Light Indicator: What could be the Problem?

The check engine light is designed to warn drivers when there is a problem with the electronic-control system in the vehicle. The light is part of what is called the onboard diagnostic system (OBD), used to report malfunctions and to help mechanics troubleshoot the problem. What the system looks for and reports depends on the make, model and year.

When the check engine light comes on, the OBD is working by sending a signal that there is some type of malfunction in the system. The onboard diagnostic system will also store what is called a trouble code at the same time, identifying the problem detected.
