San Diego County, like most other counties in the State of California, requires all drivers to receive a smog check every other year in order to renew their car's registration. There are exceptions to this rule, however, meaning that the following vehicles will not have to undergo a smog check and auto inspection, as long as they pay the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) an annual $24 "smog abatement fee":

• cars made in or before 1975
• cars that are six or less model years old
• hybrid and electric cars
• motorcycles and trailers
• vehicles weighing more than 14,000 lbs. that are powered by natural gas
