A bearing is generically defined as a rotating piece of equipment that offers support and reduces friction between two (or more) pieces of moving pieces of equipment. In motor vehicles, there are a number of different types of bearings, including:

• Ball bearings: As one of the most common types of bearings in general use, ball bearings handle thrust and radial loads with generally small weights. In motor vehicles, ball bearings are commonly found in the axles and shafts.
• Roller bearings: Operating with cylinders (rather than spheres or balls), roller bearings are able to disperse the weight of a load over a greater surface area, which allows them to handle heavier loads. Roller bearings may come in a few different varieties and (depending on the specific type of roller bearing) may typically be found in engine pumps, compressors and transmissions.
• Thrust bearings: Able to support heavy loads, thrust bearings support axial loads and are commonly used in gear sets (within the transmission), as well as between a vehicle’s housing and rotating shafts.

• Abrasion, which occurs as the result of contaminants scraping the bearing’s surface and, in turn, causing erosion
• Fatigue, which occurs as a result of a bearing being overused (i.e. continually loaded and reloaded). Fatigue tends to affect smaller bearings faster due to the fact that they have less surface area and are more easily worn down.
• Pressure-inducing welding, which causes the bearing’s metal to meld with another piece of metal under intense pressure (or heat).
