Car Care Tip #9 – Battery

Inspect batteries and battery cables for corrosion, cracks and dirt. Hot weather can shorten a battery’s life, so have it tested if it’s near the end of its warranty. It’s a lot easier to replace a dying battery before a trip than replace a dead one on the side of the road.

Car Care Tip #8 – Maintenance

Hot weather can be rough on cars. Higher temperatures speed up a car’s wear and tear, as fluids and lubricants break down more quickly. But by following the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule (see your car’s owner’s manual) and taking the following precautions, your car will be ready for a long, hot summer.

Car Care Tip #7 – Automatic Transmission Fluid

Automatic Transmission Fluid serves a multitude of purposes. Among other things, it cleans, cools, lubricates, transmits force, transmits pressure, inhibits varnish build-up and protects the transmission on a day-to-day basis. For best results, have your car’s transmission fluid and filter changed every two years or 24,000 miles. This extends the life of your vehicle’s transmission.

Car Care Tip #6 – Check Your Tire Wear

Tire wear is a dead giveaway that the wheels are out of alignment or that steering or suspension parts are worn. So anytime you find unusual tire wear, be sure to have the steering and suspension inspected by an ASE-certified technician to find out what’s causing the problem.

Car Care Tip #5 – Keep an Auto Log

Keep a pad and pencil in the glove compartment and use them to record your gas fill-ups and mileage. If you notice that your gas mileage worsens, mention it to your service man. It may be an early warning sign that something is wrong with your car.

Furgerson’s Garage Recognized as “Green Station”

August 26, 2010

California Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC) recognizes Furgerson’s Garage as a “Green Station”

The California Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC) has recognized Furgerson’s Garage as a “Green Station”, only 2nd in Encinitas and 36th in the state.

Encinitas, CA– The California Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC) along with the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) has recognized the efforts of Furgerson’s Garage, who has voluntarily helped to prevent chemical waste and pollution in California. Furgerson’s Garage joins only one other “Green Station” in San Diego County, bringing the total to 36 recognized automotive repair facilities in the state.

Repair facilities, such as Furgerson’s Garage in Encinitas, have an important responsibility: the proper handling and disposal of the toxic substances generated during the course of their business. In an effort to promote and recognize this practice, BAR has cultivated a partnership with the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), the agency that regulates the use and recycling of hazardous waste products. This new partnership gives automotive repair shops the opportunity to promote DTSC’s voluntary program by which auto repair facilities and smog check stations may become recognized as a “Green Station” if a station meets the DTSC’s requirements.

“As an automotive repair professional in California, I feel it’s my responsibility to do all that I can to protect our environment, not only by properly performing Smog Check inspection and repairs that aid in keeping our air clean, but also handling and disposing of the toxic substances we generate in an environmentally friendly way” said Brad Dow, Furgerson’s Garage owner. “In the wake of the Gulf oil spill, I think it’s even more important that repair shops such as mine do everything possible to follow the guidelines set forth by the BAR and DTSC to help reduce our carbon footprint.”

Family-owned, operated and AAA approved, Furgerson’s Garage has serviced the automotive needs of Encinitas residents and neighboring cities since 1981. Furgerson’s Garage is staffed by customer service representatives and technicians who take great pride in their work. With nine service bays, workstations equipped with the latest technical information and an up-to-date repair management system, our ASE certified master technicians and certified service advisors can take care of your complete auto, SUV, hybrid and light truck mechanical repairs. Car Care Tip #3 – Air Filter Replacement

Replace air filters. When the engine air filter clogs w/ dirt, dust & bugs, it causes your engine to work harder & your car becomes less fuel-efficient. Replacing a clogged air filter could improve your gas mileage by as much as 10 % and save you 15 cents a gallon. We recommend changing your car’s air & oil filters every three months or 3,000 miles or as specified in your owner’s manual.
