Flush it from your cooling system as recommended in your manual (typically every two years; every five years for newer coolants). Failing to do so can damage your radiator, clog your heater core, and cause the thermostat and water pump to fail.

Avoid mixing coolants that are different in color. If your coolant is pink, don’t add a green formulation to it. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a thick solution that won’t do its job. Use only the coolant specified in your owner’s manual.

Battery Care

Have your battery checked by a professional. Some corrosion can’t be seen by the naked eye. Test your car’s starting and charging system every six months. Inspect your battery cables, posts and fasteners to ensure cables are in good shape and secured firmly to the battery.

The Importance of Addressing a Coolant Leak

Coolant leaks are just as problematic as oil leaks, and can lead to severe engine damage. If you notice the temperature gauge on your instrument panel rising, manually inspect the hoses, cabin floor, and ground, and let the professionals at Furgerson’s Garage pressure test your cooling system. Not addressing a coolant leak could lead to $$$$ in repairs in the future.
